What to Expect: Recovery from Vein Surgery on Legs

If you’re considering vein surgery, you’re likely equally as concerned about your recovery as you are about the surgery itself. Recovering from any procedure can often seem daunting, but the expert providers at Edward G. Mackay & Associates have your back.

Let’s take a look at each stage of your recovery from vein surgery on the legs, so you know exactly what you can expect after your surgery and where you can go for outstanding vein surgery in Tampa Bay, FL.

Immediately After Vein Surgery on Legs

Immediately following your vein surgery, you’ll likely notice some incisions and bruising around your treated areas. This is normal and typically resolves on its own within the next few weeks of recovery. Pain and discomfort should be minimal, as most vein surgery on the legs is minimally invasive. If you find your discomfort bothersome, talk to your provider. They may recommend taking an over-the-counter pain medication like Tylenol or ibuprofen to ease your pain. Your provider will also recommend compression socks to reduce swelling and promote healthy blood flow in the legs.

Most patients do not have many issues returning to their normal daily activities; however, you should not overdo it for the first week or two after your surgery (depending on your procedure). Your providers may also avoid baths or pools of water for the first week following your procedure to avoid infection.

One Week After Vein Surgery on Legs

You’ll likely start feeling back to normal within the first week of your recovery. It’s important to remember to stay away from rigorous physical activities during this time, such as playing sports, running, or lifting heavy weights. You still need to give your body a break and some time to heal. That being said, it’s important to keep your body moving to promote healthy blood flow and healing. The provider typically recommends 30-minute walks daily. The more you move your legs, the better they will feel in the long run – just remember to keep it light and low impact.

Your incisions and bruising may still be prominent during this time. Mild pain and discomfort are still normal as well. If you find your pain is getting worse, you must talk to your provider. As you move your legs, you may notice swelling, inflammation, and a tight sensation in your treated areas. These are all normal parts of the healing process. It’s important you keep wearing your compression socks regularly during this time.

One Month After Vein Surgery on Legs

After one month, your provider will likely have a follow-up appointment scheduled to ensure you are healing well. At this time, they’ll assess the success of your leg surgery and ensure the treated veins are closed. If not, your provider may recommend a second round of treatments. Multiple rounds of treatment for varicose and spider veins are normal and to be expected. Your provider will let you know if another treatment round will benefit you.

At this time, your doctor may give you the OK to return to your normal physical activities, including playing sports or running. However, some swelling is still normal during this time. For this reason, it’s important that you still wear your compression socks regularly.

Tips for Recovering from Vein Surgery on Legs

When recovering from vein surgery on your legs, there are a few helpful tips that our doctors, like our patients, keep in mind. These tips include:

  • Elevate your legs throughout the day and while sleeping.

Moist warm compression for tender lumps.

  • Wear your compression socks to minimize scarring.
  • Walk for at least 10 minutes every day to promote healthy healing.
  • Keep your bandages dry before they are removed.
