What is lip filler?
Lip filler is an injectable treatment used to add fullness and improve lip definition. Juvéderm is a collection of dermal fillers made with hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the skin that helps hold moisture. For the lips, the goal may be a little more volume, a more defined border, or a change in proportions.
Your preferences are the starting point. At Mackay Aesthetics, a consultation gives you time to discuss the look you want, review your health history, and understand the benefits and limitations of treatment. The amount and placement of filler depend on your anatomy and your individual plan.
Understanding your Juvéderm options
Different Juvéderm products serve different purposes. The practice’s original lip-filler guide focuses on Juvéderm Volbella XC, which is used for lip augmentation and the correction of lines around the mouth in adults over 21. Juvéderm Ultra XC is another product approved for lip augmentation in adults over 21.
Products intended for cheeks or other facial areas are not interchangeable with lip treatments. Your provider can explain which option, if any, fits your goals. For a broader look at the collection, explore our dermal filler guide.
How does lip filler work?
A trained provider places small amounts of filler into selected areas of the lips. The hyaluronic acid gel adds volume and attracts water. The treatment plan may focus on fullness, the lip border, or the balance between the upper and lower lip.
Volbella XC also treats fine lines around the mouth. Treatment can be tailored to a subtle change, but no particular appearance or degree of symmetry can be guaranteed. Discuss examples of the look you like and what is realistic for your features.
Before and during your visit
Your consultation includes a discussion of previous cosmetic treatments, allergies, medications, medical conditions, and any history of cold sores. Tell your provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have an infection or irritation near the treatment area. Your provider will decide whether to proceed, postpone treatment, or discuss another option.
Before injections, your provider will explain the planned product, placement, possible side effects, aftercare, and cost. Comfort measures may include a topical numbing product; some fillers also contain lidocaine. The time needed depends on your assessment and treatment plan.
Do not stop prescribed medication on your own. Ask your treating clinician how to prepare and which instructions apply to you.
Recovery and results
You may notice a change in volume soon after treatment, but early swelling can make the lips look different from the settled result. Redness, swelling, tenderness, and bruising can occur. Follow the instructions given by your injector and allow time for recovery before judging the outcome.
The original practice guide describes Volbella XC results lasting up to a year. Duration varies with the product, treatment, and individual factors; it is not a promise that every result will last that long. At follow-up, your provider can assess how you are healing and discuss whether maintenance is appropriate.
Benefits, risks, and informed care
Lip filler is a medical procedure. Along with temporary injection-site reactions, possible complications include infection, lumps, and allergic reactions. Rarely, filler can enter a blood vessel and cause tissue damage, vision problems, blindness, or stroke.
Seek immediate medical attention for unusual pain, changes in vision, white, gray, or blue skin near the injection site, or signs of a stroke during or after treatment. Your provider should explain how to recognize a problem and whom to contact before you leave your appointment.
Read the FDA’s dermal filler information and the Juvéderm lip treatment information for product details and safety considerations.
A plan for your lips—and your goals
The practice’s original guide also discusses combining lip filler with other aesthetic treatments. If you have concerns beyond lip volume, ask about your options during the same consultation. Botox Cosmetic and dermal fillers work differently and address different concerns; a combined plan should be based on an individual assessment.
