Meet Dr. Mackay

Are your legs frequently tired, achy, and sore? Do you notice your legs appear to be swollen fairly regularly? Are you wondering what kind of doctor to see about leg pain and swelling?

Well, if you’re experiencing any of the following signs and symptoms, you may benefit from a consultation with a vein specialist – someone like board-certified vascular surgeon Dr. Edward G. Mackay at Edward G. Mackay and Associates, LLC in the Tampa Bay area, Florida.

  • Throbbing leg pain
  • Muscle spasms in the legs
  • Legs that feel heavy, tired, and achy (without apparent cause)
  • Pain when walking or standing (which is relieved when legs are elevated)
  • Pain and swelling that occurs in the left leg only
  • Burning and itching in the legs
  • Restless legs
  • Swelling in one or both feet and legs, especially at the end of the day
  • Swelling that makes one leg noticeably larger than the other
  • Swelling in one leg only, including swelling of the foot and toes

One or more of the above may indicate you have a vein-related medical condition that requires treatment. Get the care you need, sooner rather than later, for the best possible health outcome. Possible Causes of Leg Pain & Swelling

It’s impossible to know what might be causing your leg pain and swelling without an in-person exam, as well as a thorough review of your symptoms, concerns, and medical history. At Edward G. Mackay and Associates, LLC, our medical practice is laser-focused on the many venous problems that can affect your legs – so, we know what to look for and exactly how to treat it.

Leg pain, for example, regularly occurs along with varicose veins, those twisted and engorged veins that can disrupt blood flow, causing it to pool in your legs, leading to serious consequences if left untreated. This includes the development of blood clots in the deep veins of your legs (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT), which could become life-threatening. If you are middle-aged or older, obese, have a mostly sedentary lifestyle, or have a family history of varicose veins, you are at risk of developing this unsightly and unhealthy condition.

Likewise, leg swelling is an extremely common result of a variety of vascular disorders. The buildup of blood in the veins of your leg may cause them to swell – this is a common symptom of varicose veins. The presence of DVT can also cause your legs to swell.

Swollen legs are also a telltale sign of something less common but very often misdiagnosed: lymphedema. This chronic condition causes just one leg to swell, and often includes swelling in your toes. Lymphedema occurs when there is a problem with the vessels of your lymphatic system, which play an important role in the immune system. This is just one more reason why you’ll want to see a vein expert. Please note that Dr. Mackay does not treat lymphedema. He will help diagnose the condition and refer you to a physician to treat this condition.
