Spider veins are tiny red or blue vessels, usually about the size of a fine thread or a bit larger that appear beneath the skin's surface . At times they may resemble a spider’s web, hence the name “spider vein.”

Dr. Mackay is an expert at treating spider veins using sclerotherapy to safely get rid of the issue.

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins, also known as telangiectasias, are those small, blue, purple, or red veins that appear primarily on the legs or face. At least 1/3 of the adult female population is estimated to experience spider veins.

Spider Veins are generally harmless but can be a source of cosmetic concern. These veins are usually caused by weakened valves within the veins themselves, allowing blood to pool and create those visible, intricate web-like patterns.

#1 Sclerotherapy

The Recommended Treatment for most spider veins.

One effective way to deal with spider veins is through Sclerotherapy. During this treatment, a special solution called a sclerosing agent is injected directly into the damaged spider veins. This solution irritates the vein's lining, causing it to collapse and eventually fade from view. The blood reroutes to healthier veins, restoring proper blood flow. Several types of sclerosing agents can be used in different strengths to treat spider, reticular, and varicose veins.

Sclerotherapy is a straightforward and minimally invasive procedure, often done in an outpatient setting.

If you're curious about the sclerotherapy procedure, please watch our helpful video that walks you through the process. In this interview, Bethany Berghoffer, PA-C at the Dr. Mackay Vein & Circulation Specialist Center, discusses how she can effectively use Sclerotherapy to treat spider veins.

Here are some key points to note about this treatment:

  • Quick: Sclerotherapy sessions typically take less than an hour.
  • Minimal Discomfort: Most patients may experience mild discomfort during the sclerotherapy procedure.
  • Recovery: You can easily return to your regular activities almost immediately.
  • Multiple Sessions: Depending on your spider veins, you may require multiple sessions to achieve your desired results.

Frequently Asked Questions about Spider Vein Treatments

Typically, the sessions last between 15-30 minutes. One injection is often administered per inch with multiple injections per session. The strength of the solution depends on the size and degree of varicosity.

The FDA-approved dosage is 0.5 to 2ml for each injection. On average, most patients will require a minimum of 3-4 treatments, and treatments are done 2-3 weeks apart. This treatment is not recommended for women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.

Varicose vein injections are deemed medically necessary and are covered by most insurance. Treatments for cosmetic spider veins and reticular veins are not covered by insurance in most cases.
