How to Find Relief from Your Painful Veins

February 26, 2022

If you’re one of those people who find their varicose veins too painful to ignore, you’re likely in search of how you can get effective relief or even banish them altogether.

Well, here’s some good news: you don’t need to look far to find the solution for your painful veins. Below, we’ve prepared some tips from one of Florida’s renowned vein specialists—our very own Dr. Edward Mackay—to help you break free from the discomfort and confidence issues brought on by your varicose veins. Check these out.

Tip #1 Elevate Your Legs.

Keeping your legs elevated, ideally above the level of your heart for at least 15 minutes three to four times daily, helps boost blood circulation to the rest of your body, thereby soothing the pain and swelling.

Tip #2 Wear Compression Stockings.

Compression stockings are designed to also help maintain healthy blood flow in your veins, alleviate pain or discomfort, and prevent varicose veins from getting worse.

Tip #3 Take Vein Supplements.

This helps optimize the effectiveness of the self-care strategies mentioned in this list.

Vitamins B, C, and E promote blood circulation and help improve your vein health. Flavonoids are essential compounds that also enhance your blood vessels’ ability to expand (vasodilation).

While these nutrients are found naturally in the foods you eat (specifically fruits and vegetables), taking supplements can help ensure you are getting the right amount of these nutrients every day. Of course, you should consult your doctor as to how much to take on a daily basis and which ones are right for you.

Tip #4 Get Moving.

Exercising also encourages healthy blood circulation through your legs. You don’t need to engage in strenuous physical activity to reap this benefit. Walking, swimming, biking, and doing other low-intensity exercises every day can go a long way toward improving your blood circulation and providing you with effective symptom relief.

Tip #5 Seek Expert Care from Dr. Edward Mackay.

If you’ve taken all the steps that we’ve mentioned above but without success, your best bet is to see Dr. Mackay. He will carefully assess your varicose veins and recommend the suitable intervention for you based on their severity as well as your overall health, medical history, and personal preference. Your treatment plan could consist of any of the following:

  • Sclerotherapy
  • Vein surgery (e.g., vein stripping, phlebectomy, or endoscopic vein surgery)
  • Endovenous laser therapy (EVLT)
  • Radiofrequency ablation

With Dr. Mackay’s expertise and sharp clinical acumen, you can count on him to help you achieve the best possible treatment outcome—and successfully overcome your vein problem.
