Do Compression Stockings Prevent Varicose and/or Spider Veins?

Compression stockings do not completely prevent varicose veins or spider veins. Compression stockings do help with treatment, recovery and reducing the incidence of vein disease.

Veins become problematic as the one-way valves fail to close, stretching the veins, and leading to excess blood in the veins. This excess blood leads to poor circulation, causing swelling, heaviness, and cramping in the legs.

Compression stockings work by compressing the legs, which then compresses the vein to reduce the stretching of the vein and improve blood flow. They are often used as a first line treatment for any diagnosed vein disease to help reduce symptoms of swelling and improve circulation. They are also used routinely after having any type of vein procedure, such as laser therapy or sclerotherapy to support the treated veins.

Reducing Risk with Compression Stockings

They can even be used before vein disease is diagnosed, to help reduce risk of developing varicose veins. Certain risk factors may increase the possibility to develop varicose veins, such as:

  • pregnancy
  • sedentary lifestyle
  • obesity, and sitting
  • standing for long periods at work.

In these groups of people, compression stockings may reduce pressure in the veins and improve blood flow to reduce varicose vein diagnosis and symptoms. Those who work long hours on their feet, such as those in retail stores and nurses or those who sit all day can have improved circulation from using compression stockings.

Strengths of Compression Stockings

There are different strengths of compression stockings, which can either be bought over the counter or purchased through a pharmacy with a prescription. The different strengths provide varying amounts of pressure. For many, it is best to start with a lower pressure and slowly work into a higher pressure. It also depends if you have already been diagnosed with vein disease or you are trying to reduce the risk for vein disease. Those with vein disease will likely need a higher compression to reduce their symptoms than someone looking to potentially prevent varicose veins.

How to get started with Compression Stockings for Veins.

It is best to speak with your vascular surgeon for a full evaluation and diagnosis of any vein disease to determine the type of compression stockings that have the most benefit for your needs. Call the office of Dr. Mackay at 727-261-0047 to learn more.
