When can I go back to work after Sclerotherapy?

October 9, 2020

Varicose veins and spider veins can be treated with a procedure called sclerotherapy, which is a treatment that can be performed in the office. Sclerotherapy uses a sclerosant, which is a specifically formulated chemical that is placed into the problematic veins and allows for a cascade of events that leads to the eventual scarring and removal of the vein by the body. Based on how large and how many spider veins need to be treated, multiple treatments may be required.

Since sclerotherapy is performed in the office, the procedure can be completed in less than an hour. Many patients want to know how soon they can return to work after treatment. This blog post will explain the short and long of this answer

“After the procedure is completed, you are able to return to work and normal activities right away, however there are a few restrictions and instructions that are advised for the best recovery possible. ” – Dr. Edward Mackay

Sclerotherapy Tips for Recovery

  • Compression garments: Use of compression hose or stockings should be worn for at least 4 weeks after the sclerotherapy treatment. They help to reduce swelling and promote improved circulation.
  • Exercise plan: Daily walking, light jogging, biking, or swimming (after the second day) for at least 30 minutes can improve circulation and the healing process. Exercise is encouraged, but heavy weight lifting or other intensive exercises should be avoided for at least 2 days
  • Sun exposure: In order to avoid any areas of hyperpigmentation, try to stay directly out of the sun’s rays for the first 4 weeks. If you need to be out in the sun, you should wear a broad spectrum SPF sun
  • Heat exposure: Exposure to heat in the form of saunas, jacuzzis, or hot tubs can delay healing or potentially undo the entire sclerotherapy treatment, as heat causes blood vessels to dilate and this can disrupt the sclerosant. Avoid these heat treatments for 4 weeks.

Sclerotherapy allows for return to work the same day of the procedure and requires minimal post procedure instructions and activities to avoid. If you are interested in sclerotherapy as a treatment for your spider or varicose veins, speak with a vein specialist to learn more.
