Most patients seeking medical attention for varicose veins respond well to sclerotherapy injections. However, some patients require multiple sessions of sclerotherapy if the veins are large. These larger, more painful "ropey" veins (reticular) are excellent candidates for phlebectomy or vein micro-extraction.
Phlebectomy is a safe, in-office procedure for the removal of larger varicosities. Dr. Mackay makes a tiny incision at the affected site through which the unwanted vein is gently extracted. Most incisions are closed with small pieces of sterile tape. Phlebectomy requires only local anesthesia. Unlike traditional surgical vein stripping, this procedure is minimally invasive, is performed in the office and leaves the procedure site virtually scar-free.
Most patients need only one day off from work in which to have phlebectomy performed and can return to normal activities within 24 hours! Most patients usually require no postoperative pain medication beyond ibuprofen. The legs are elevated for the first day and support stockings are worn post-operatively for one week. Bruising will appear, but usually dissipates within a few weeks.
