Hands-on training for physicians and no-cost treatment for patients twice a year

Patients line up as if they were giving away something for nothing. And they are. US-based vein and laser specialist, Dr. Edward G. Mackay and a select few of his colleagues, offer no-cost treatment to local residents of impoverished areas of the Dominican Republic during their bi-annual Venous Masters Practicum (VMP) hands-on physician training sessions. Patients who are experiencing painful varicose veins and spider veins, and cannot otherwise afford these procedures, are treated throughout the week-long medical sessions.

LOCAL VEIN SPECIALIST CELEBRATES 5 YEARS OF VENOUS TRAINING AND PROCEDURES IN DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Course director Edward Mackay, M.D., left, supervises an ambulatory phlebectomy performed by an attendee as another observes the procedure.

experts, the patients that come in for treatment at Clinica Canela, a private hospital in La Romana, are the ones that really benefit. Each patient receives personal treatment and a thorough examination of their problematic veins, just as if they were at the doctor's own practice. Depending on the level of severity and health risk, patients are able to obtain surgery for their varicose or spider veins right at the clinic for no-cost.

Since they have so many patients that have vein problems and need treatment, the doctors are able to evaluate innovative procedures in a well-established and safe environment. They are able to perform clinical trials with these patients because of the numerous volunteers and willing participants due to their leg conditions. It gives them the opportunity to test new phlebectomy devices and receive feedback from these patients.

The VMP partners with the Julian Javier Foundation, a nationally and internationally recognized organization for the treatment and increased awareness of venous diseases. Dr. Javier, one of the doctors involved with the procedures, heads the Foundation named after his father for the promotion and awareness of Heart and Vascular diseases in impoverished areas of the Dominican Republic.

Course director Jose Almeida, M.D., left, watches closely as an attendee performs an endovenous radiofrequency ablation and another observes the procedure.

The next VMP training and patient treatment is scheduled for July 2011 in the Dominican Republic.
